Liverpool - a plea for Mersey…

The people haven’t changed but the streets have. Regeneration by private developers has transformed much of the city centre, from the sprawling Liverpool One shopping complex to the Pier Head - a process which eventually saw Unesco strip the town of its world heritage status. Tourism means that a spruced up place like Mathew Street, now with al fresco dining, bears little resemblance to the old dingy alley where Merseybeat was born in the early ‘60s. But despite the new money, further afield the social problems remain - as in other cities nationwide, gentrification has priced many local families out of the property market.
